Your Spouse/Domestic Partner under age 65 may enroll for up to $250,000 of coverage. Dependent children under age 26 may enroll for $10,000 or $20,000 of coverage.

Please note: Member must have coverage on self in order for the Spouse/Domestic Partner to elect D.C. Term Life coverage.

An *Option To Accelerate Payment of Death Benefits, is included with no additional cost to the member. This feature allows members and Spouse/Domestic Partners early access to a portion of their life insurance prior to death. If either are diagnosed with a terminal illness and have a life expectancy of 6 months or less, you can receive 90% of your coverage amount, up to a maximum of $100,000.

This feature allows you early access to a portion of your life insurance if you are diagnosed as chronically ill and unable to perform at least 2 Activities of Daily Living (ADL’s) or have a severe cognitive impairment. “Activities of Daily Living” are defined as: Eating, Bathing, Continence, Dressing, Toileting, Transferring.

An Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) Benefit Rider has been included in the D.C. Term Life Insurance Plan and is available to Members, Spouses/Domestic Partners or Children. A matching benefit will be paid out if cause of death is due to an accident. A benefit can also be paid if a severe covered non fatal injury occurs due to an accident. Dismemberment includes the loss, or the loss of use, of body parts or functions (e.g., limbs, speech, eyesight, or hearing).

Only 5 health questions are required for online enrollment. However, an Attending Physician Statement or paramedical may be ordered, based on medical history.

Unlike most Term Life Insurance policies, this one doesn’t reduce as quickly as you age which allows you to keep more of your coverage for a longer period.

Benefit reduces to:

65% of coverage amount at age 65.

50% of original coverage amount at age 70.

35% of original coverage amount at age 75.

Coverage terminates at age 80.

Yes. If you are no longer insured for the D.C. Term Life Insurance coverage because your membership in the covered class ends, or part of the group contract ends, you can convert to an individual policy within 31 days of such termination without medical underwriting. Please note: the AD&D coverage is not eligible for conversion.

Term Life benefits are payable to your beneficiary(ies).

A death benefit is not payable if your death is caused by a suicide within 2 years of the date your coverage became effective.

Coverage is effective the first of the month following approval of your enrollment.
